Research Interests
Adaptation Industry, Genre, Melodrama, Reception Studies

Dr. John Smith is a Senior Lecturer and the Director of World Cinema. His teaching and research interests in the adaptation industry, melodrama, and reception studies have been shaped by his background in English, and film and media studies. He teaches classes in film genres and film theory, and has published on film adaptation, and television seriality. Current projects include an historiographical essay, “Song of the South (1946) and the Business of Nostalgia in 1986 Atlanta,” and a study of changes in movie exhibition and reception, “Cinephilia at the End of the World: Movie Houses and Rooms with a View.” Since 2020, he has advised students on the programming for the World Cinema Spring Film Series.
