Jacob Havers is a MA student in history at Clemson University. He recently graduated from Clemson University with a BA in History and Religious Studies. He is currently a teaching assistant in the History department. Jacob spent much of his undergraduate research focusing on Race, Gender, Religion and Sexuality in the US South, but has recently shifted to studying these identities as they relate to Sports. Specifically, he is interested in how different identities shape the experiences of different athletes. He is interested in questions such as why two athletes in the same sport of similar skill and ability may face vastly different obstacles getting into and then thriving in their sports, as these obstacles connect to their various identities. Additionally, there is a focus in his research about athletes speaking up on social issues, and why their identities and political beliefs change the level of acceptance they receive for speaking up about their beliefs. With these broad interests in hand, Jacob is still looking to narrow his research interests to a particular sport or group of athletes.
