Profile

I am Senior Associate Dean of the Clemson University Honors College and a Professor in the Political Science Department. I also lead the Dixon Global Policy Scholars program in the Honors College, and teach courses in American politics and and public policy. I also mentor students who are pursuing departmental honors in political science. My research largely focuses on the U.S. Congress, including questions of representation, how Congress interacts with other actors, and how social media is used by political elites. I am the author of articles appearing in Journal of Politics, Political Research Quarterly, Social Science Quarterly, Political Behavior, Presidential Studies Quarterly, State Politics and Policy Quarterly, and American Review of Politics. I have received one national award: the Craig L. Brians Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research & Mentorship (awarded by the Political Science Education section of the American Political Science Association). I also have received four university-wide awards at Clemson: the Provost Senior Outstanding Teacher Award, the Phil Prince Award for Innovation in Teaching, the Frank A. Burtner Award for Excellence in Advising, and the Douglas W. Bradbury Award for outstanding contributions to the Honors College. I also have received the Award of Distinction from Clemson's National Scholars Program. In 2013-14, I served as a Congressional Fellow through the American Political Science Association, where I worked on the staff of a United States Senator.

Research Interests

My research focuses on the interaction between the U.S. Congress and other political actors. I also examine how Congress interacts with the public, including studies of representation, voter turnout, and the use of social media by political elites.
