Photogrammetry of Plaster Ceilings at Drayton Hall
Photogrammetry of Plaster Ceilings at Drayton Hall in collaboration with the Master of Science in Historic Preservation Program at Clemson University
In 2021, Drayton Hall received a grant from the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT) to conduct research and develop a Spring Semester course for Clemson University's Masters in Historic Preservation Program (MSHP). The grant focused on an investigation of the failing Great Hall plaster ceiling, with WLCC historic preservation specialists collaborating with our colleagues at Drayton Hall, students and professors from MSHP. Various noninvasive techniques such as photogrammetry (WLCC), 3D laser scanning (Meadors), X-ray, surface penetrating radar (CBZ Consulting, Charles Bransby-Zachary), and thermography were employed to study potential issues and past interventions affecting the plaster.
In May 2021, students presented their findings from the semester-long study discussing these advanced methods for assessing historic plaster stability. This initiative underscores a commitment to integrating cutting-edge technologies into preservation practices, supported by NCPTT funding and partnerships within the Preservation Community in Charleston.
