K-12 Initiatives
One of the Center for Roofing Innovation and Leadership goals is K-12 outreach to increase students’ exposure to construction and roofing careers. The roofing industry faces significant workforce challenges in field and management positions. As a critical piece of the building envelope system, a qualified and trained roofing workforce is essential to meet industry demands. Current studies indicate that construction education and career awareness, particularly in roofing, are lacking, especially in the Carolinas. Various initiatives, from Hard Hat Field days to virtual learning modules, are in place to help address this gap and expose students to the possibilities of a career in roofing construction.
Hardhat Field Days
The Center for Roofing Innovation and Leadership at Clemson University, in collaboration with The Roofing Alliance and Carolinas Associated General Contractors, has developed “Hardhat Field Days,” which are one-day sessions designed to expose high school students to career options within the industry. These field day events are a bootcamp focused on equity-centered workforce development through high-quality roofing construction education and skill development modules. It targets vocational and trade skill development for high school students.
Parents and Guidance Counselors
Report of career paths - This report explores career progression within the roofing industry for college graduates. It details the career paths, position descriptions, experience requirements, responsibilities, and compensation for roles in contracting, distribution, and manufacturing sectors. The findings are based on round-table discussions with various companies in the roofing industry.
Career Development Centers and Associate Degree Programs
