Description

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is committed to ensuring that animals involved in teaching, research, and demonstration associated with the University receive humane care and treatment. The IACUC is charged with reviewing all faculty, staff, or student-proposed research or teaching use of animals, regardless of where the work is performed and the source of funding, if any. The IACUC has set forth procedures for reporting, without fear of reprisal, concerns about the humane use and treatment of animals utilized in research and teaching at Clemson University. This committee regularly inspects and monitors the animal care and use program and animal facilities to ensure all components comply with regulations and guidelines outlined in the Animal Welfare Act and Regulations, the Public Health Service Policy for the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and other regulations. The animal facilities are registered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and undergo annual inspection by that agency. The IACUC has the responsibility and authority to review, approve, withhold approval, or require changes in research, teaching, or testing activities involving the use of animals. The IACUC meets monthly to review research applications/protocols that involve animal use. Clemson has an Animal Welfare Assurance on file with NIH's Office for Laboratory Animal Welfare. Committee membership is structured following federal requirements and members are appointed by the President of the University. There must be at least five members, There may be multiple members in each membership type.

This committee is authorized by the Clemson University Committee on Committees. Changes to its description or composition should be initiated with the Faculty Senate Office.
