Dr. Carbonell attended the University of Virginia and the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his surgical residency at POH Medical Center/MSU-COM Statewide Campus System in Pontiac, MI, and a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery and advanced GI surgery at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. Dr. Carbonell was recruited to Prisma Health in 2007 where he now serves as Vice Chairman of Academic Affairs for the Department of Surgery at Prisma Health-Upstate and Professor of Surgery at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine-Greenville. He is also the Fellowship Director for the Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship and co-director of the Hernia Center. Dr. Carbonell specializes in minimally invasive and robotic surgery with an emphasis on benign disorders of the esophagus, complex hernia, and abdominal wall diseases. He is a former president of the Americas Hernia Society and is a reviewer and editorial board member for various journals. He has published over 100 articles and book chapters related to the field of minimally invasive surgery and hernia disease. Dr. Carbonell consistently strives to ensure the academic success of his faculty and has helped establish research partnerships between his faculty and those from Clemson University. Most recently, he has been working with Dr. Kevin Taaffe of the Department of Industrial Engineering on simulating the effects of operating room staff movement and microbial load. They also received grant funding to study operating room efficiency. He also collaborates with Clemson bioengineer, Dr. Alexey Vertegel to investigate bactericidal coatings. He is credited with developing a novel technique for robotic hernia repair and was the first in the world to perform it. As Vice Chairman of Academic Affairs for the Department of Surgery at Prisma Health-Upstate, Dr. Carbonell continues the long-standing tradition of establishing connections between his faculty and researchers at Clemson University. These connections have taken the expertise of Clemson scientists and coupled it with leading surgeons to develop surgical devices, diagnostic modalities, and bountiful information that continues to drive how patients are cared for in South Carolina.
