After completing her residency in Pediatrics and a fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Dr. Dietrich committed herself to education and excellence for all levels of clinical training. She has worked with medical students, residents, fellows and junior attendings to elevate each learner to the best he/she can be. She worked in medical education at The Ohio State University for over 25 years and the American College of Emergency Physicians, at the state and national level, for over 20 years. She has worked extensively with curriculum development to assure successful completion of shelf, inservice, certification and recertification exams. She has also been involved in several research projects, particularly, as a collaborator, with Dr. Keith Yeates, with research that focused on mild head injuries (concussions). Dietrich has created Emergency Medicine curriculum for Board Review and other educational projects to enhance emergency care for pediatric patients. She has published numerous educational articles to enhance patient care, and mentored numerous faculty and encouraged involvement in national leadership roles. She has been actively involved in the committee as a member (over 20 years) and chair the last two years of the ACEP PEM National comm, advocating and working to publish resources and guidelines to assist her colleagues with this tremendous crisis. In her roles as Chair and Medical Director of Education at Ohio ACEP she has worked to enhance collaboration across specialties. Dietrich has worked with trauma surgeons to enhance care for pediatric trauma patients, through education and development of protocols and guidelines. She has also developed numerous educational curriculum and products for attendings, residents and students.
How their research is transforming health care
Dr. Dietrich has been involved in several research projects, particularly, as a collaborator, with Dr. Keith Yeates, with research that focused on mild head injuries (concussions). The collaboration led to numerous publications and the development of guidelines and recognition of the major impact of concussions in children. She was involved in the development and of guidelines, including review of the CDC guidelines. As a member and chair of the National ACEP Pediatric Emergency Medicine Committee she has developed and reviewed significant publications regarding the safe care of children in the emergency department and guidelines related to raising the standard of care for children. She has edited numerous texts and contributed chapters to numerous pediatric emergency medicine publications to elevate the care of children. In her roles as Chair and Medical Director of Education at Ohio ACEP she has worked to enhance collaboration across specialties. She has worked with trauma surgeons to enhance care for pediatric trauma patients, through education and development of protocols and guidelines. The project with Dr. Anjali Joseph will utilize her expertise in design to rethink the way in which we deliver mental health care to children in the acute care setting. We need an approach similar to the trauma system, for pediatric mental health that assists with design, flow and resources across the spectrum of acute care. This is an incredible opportunity to work with colleagues in psychology and psychiatry to address the tremendous deficits in the emergency care of children with behavioral/mental health emergencies. Dietrich is also actively involved in the Pediatric Readiness national effort for both ED’s and EMS. She says that healthcare workers need to work to help our rural and outlying communities prepare to deliver the highest standard of pediatric care.
