How their research is transforming health care

One aspect of Dr. Griffeth’s research has focused on improving assessment of medical students to prepare them to be successful as doctors. By improving the assessment of students, they can better understand their strengths and weaknesses leading to better focus in their education and career decision-making. More recently, he has joined a collaborative group on psychiatric clerkship directors in developing a nationally normed process for assuring medical students pursuing a career in psychiatry can be more successful. He and the group are developing a mental status exam assessment tool to meet the American Association of Medical College’s standard for exportable professional activities. Most importantly, Dr. Griffeth is transforming health care through assessment and teaching of psychiatric evaluation and treatment of patients in the emergency room. This research will lead to better outcomes for patients and reduced patient burden in the Prisma Health–Upstateemergency rooms and lead one of the major goals for becoming an Accountable Care Organization.
