Alain H Litwin, M.D., is the Vice Chair for Academics in the Department of Medicine for Prisma Health–Upstate. Previously he was a Professor in the Department of Medicine (General Internal Medicine) and Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and also served as HCV Medical Director of the Division of Substance Abuse at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He was also an attending physician at the Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY. He received his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana, and completed his residency at New York University Medical Center. His research is focused on developing and studying models of hepatitis C virus (HCV) care for drug users, and advocating for increasing access to effective care for HCV-infected patients.

Dr. Litwin’s research has help shape public policy and improved clinical guidelines. Through his research, Dr. Litwin has worked with government and community organizations on efforts to expand access to HCV treatment and has collaborated on policy statements, clinical guidelines, task forces, strategic plans and educational curricula with organizations such as the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the New York State Department of Health, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration, the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
