About

Jonathan Markowitz, M.D, graduated from the University South Carolina School of Medicine in 1995. He completed his pediatric residency training and then his fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. During his fellowship he also completed a master's program in clinical epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Markowitz served on faculty at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for approximately 5 years before he joined Greenville Children's Hospital (now Prisma Health Children’s Hospital-Upstate) in 2006, where he served as division chief of pediatric gastroenterology from 2008 to 2018. He has been the Vice Chair for Academic Affairs for the Department of Pediatrics since 2018. He is a clinical professor of pediatrics at USC School of Medicine-Greenville. Dr. Markowitz' research interests include eosinophilic esophagitis and inflammatory bowel disease. He has authored numerous articles and has lectured nationally and internationally. He is coeditor of two textbooks: Eosinophilic Esophagitis, and Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease, now in production for its 4th edition. Dr. Markowitz has been featured in local and national media. Currently, Dr. Markowitz is working with Dr. Joel Williams of Clemson University on innovative aspects of healthcare such as the development of portable applications to enhance adherence with medical and dietary regimens and improving assessment of clinical response and quality of life. How their research is transforming health care

Dr. Markowitz is an expert and thought leader in the clinical management of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). He has been involved with two of the largest published trials of elemental diet for this disorder. His practice serves as a referral center for pediatric patients across the southeastern United States with EoE. His practice is a site for epidemiologic studies on EoE as well as several industry sponsored drug trials.Dr. Markowitz and his collaborators are currently developing protocols for maximizing response to dietary therapy as well as medical therapy for EoE.Dr. Markowitz is a cofounder of the Carolinas Eosinophilic Esophagitis Collaborative, which brings together clinical and research experts from across North and South Carolina to further the science regarding diagnosis and treatment of EoE.
