Dr. Pill’s career began as a physical therapist. He received a Master’s of Science in Physical Therapy in 1999. After practicing as a physical therapist, he decided to become an orthopedic surgeon. After completing medical school at the University of Pennsylvania in 2005, he continued at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for orthopedic residency training. In 2010, he completed shoulder reconstruction and sports medicine fellowship training in Greenville, South Carolina, under the leadership of Dr. Hawkins. Upon finishing medical training, he worked as an orthopedic surgeon for OrthoCarolina for seven years. He was an adjunct faculty member with the Wake Forest School of Medicine Physician Assistant Program and served on multiple board and executive committees.
How their research is transforming health care
Dr. Pill is conducting multidisciplinary research in many areas of orthopedic surgery. He is interested in the biomechanical, clinical, population-based, and longitudinal outcome studies. Recently, he has been in involved in studies evaluating the strength of orthopedic implants in a biomechanics laboratory. Dr. Pill is serving as a principle investigator for novel injection therapies for knee arthritis using stem cells. He is working with the Clemson nursing program to design studies examining the risk factors and treatments for adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder. He also hopes to spark research interests in the fellows, residents, and students with whom he interacts daily.
