After completing medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago, Dr. Roth went on to do an Infectious diseases fellowship. Many of the conditions she treats are caused by substance abuse. Her passion to address the root of the problem led her to partnerships with Clemson University to launch a pilot program involving recovery coaches for those patients admitted with substance use disorder. Her other primary research interest is in improving the care for those with HIV. She has applied for grants to improve access to screening for HIV in our rural population.
How their research is transforming health care
By bringing attention to the underlying cause (substance use disorder) of many medical conditions requiring hospital admission such as alcoholic hepatitis, alcoholic pancreatitis, cellulitis and endocarditis related to IV drug use, Dr. Roth has encouraged providers to become more aware and have provided a means to provide help. By giving the hospital system a mechanism of combating SUD, she hopes to improve the health outcomes and quality of life for all those admitted with SUD. In the long-term, the services can be extended to outpatients as well.
