As a member of the Surgical Oncology team for the University Medical Group and the Multi Disciplinary Clinic at Prisma Health–Upstatein Greenville, SC, Steven Trocha provides cutting edge and often radical treatment for cancer patients. He specializes in the treatment of Hepatobiliary Pancreatic (HBP) tumors and melanoma and sarcomas. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin and then completed his residency in Louisiana. Steven went on to do his fellowship training for melanoma and sarcoma at the John Wayne Cancer Institute of Santa Monica, California. He recently worked with Project Amazonas and the American Embassy on a humanitarian medical trip to the Amazon. He sits on the National Board of Medical Examiners as a Step 3 Question Writer. In March of 2014, Steven became the first doctor in SC to successfully perform laparoscopic removal of lymph nodes on a patient with melanoma.
How their research is transforming health care
The transformation of health care can mean different things to different people. Steven has focused on transforming health care by: teaching undergraduates, medical students, and residents how to navigate medical information, clinical outcomes, and generate meaningful questions that impact both a local and regional level. All of this has been done through research projects that he has mentored for these health care providers of the future and has done so over the 13 years that he has been at Prisma Health–Upstate. An additional area of transforming health care that he has focused on is partnering with regional universities to help design new medical devices for him to use in the operating room. To date, he and his partners have worked on three new devices and are well into the work on working models for each. Each device has a different use and application and thus, has potentially far-reaching effects for the field of oncology.
