Dr. Cantalupo is trained as a comparative neuropsychologist and has spent a large part of his research career studying the asymmetry of brain functionality in primates. Dr. Cantalupo’s research, much of which has been published in high-ranking neuroscience journals, has provided valuable insights into the neuroanatomical bases of brain asymmetry and its behavioral and pathological correlates.
Recently, Dr. Cantalupo has become interested in developing modern, non-invasive portable technology to thoroughly assess the relationship between brain asymmetry and behavioral performance in human participants in a variety of real-life scenarios related to neurological and neurovascular disease prevention and recovery.
In this line of research, Dr. Cantalupo has started a collaboration with Dr. Ryan Hakimi at Greenville Medical Healthcare. Both Dr. Hakimi and Dr. Cantalupo are very interested in developing a method to reliably test language lateralization by using Transcranial Doppler Sonography (TDS). If successful, the procedure could provide an alternative for current, more dangerous pre-operative testing typically applied to patients undergoing brain surgery.
