About

Goutam Koley is currently a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clemson University. He received his B. Tech. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, in 1998, M.S. degree from University of Massachusetts Lowell, and Ph.D. degree from Cornell University, in 2003, all in Electrical Engineering. After completing his doctoral studies, Dr. Koley joined the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, where he was an assistant professor from 2003 to 2009, and an Associate Professor from 2009 to 2014. He joined the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clemson University as a Professor in 2014. Dr. Koley is involved in research on Micro and Nanoscale Sensors and Electronic devices, Environmental, Wearable and Bio-implantable Sensors. His research has been supported by various research agencies and till date his research expenditures has been in excess of $6 million. He has authored and co-authored over 85 journal articles, more than 180 conference presentations and seminars, 15 invited talks/seminars, and 4 book chapters. His research has resulted in 7 issued patents and several other pending patents. He is a co-founder and shareholder of 4 start-up companies, a senior member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers and a member of the American Physical Society.

How their research is transforming health care

A major focus of Koley's research is at the interface of Nanotechnology and Bio-sensing, especially involving both implantable and wearable bio-sensors for measurement of internal and external physiological parameters. The measurement of these parameters are extremely important for various emerging health care needs especially in the areas of smart health, drug discovery and personalized medicine. He and his team have existing grant from NSF on measuring K+ ion concentration from cells for cardiac health monitoring. In addition, they have developed several collaborations both inside and outside Clemson on developing implantable and self-powered sensor for wound infection monitoring, and developing environmental sensor system for monitoring asthma triggers. He and his research team are working on the former project with collaborators in the Physics (Prof. Apparao Rao) and Chemistry (Prof. Jeff Anker) and have submitted one patent application and two proposals to NIH. Koley has also been working with the pediatric department at Prisma Health with Dr. Steve Snodgrass for the last 4 years on developing an environmental monitoring system and using it to study the environmental factors responsible for triggering asthma in children. Both these projects can have high impact in transforming human health and well-being.
