About

Fei Peng is currently is currently an Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Clemson University. He received his Ph.D. at Georgia Institute of Technology, and his M.S. and B.S. at Tsinghua University. Fei’s research has been focused on the materials fabrication and properties for medical and health applications, extreme environments, and renewable energies. His current research includes developing smart bio-components using additive manufacturing, sensor materials for diagnosis and health monitoring, smart embedded sensors for joint replacement and dental implants, and bioactive and biocompatible thin films and coatings. Fei has extensive ceramic materials research experience and experience with the development of smart bio-components using additive manufacturing. He has been awarded as PI and co-PI, research grants from federal agencies such as DoD and various orporate sources. He has published 31 peer-reviewed journal articles, and is the leading author of several highly cited papers in his field. He is now serving as a member of the Advisory Board of the Bulletin of American Ceramic Society. He also organizes and serves as session chairs of professional conferences such as the Fiber Society Conference and MS&T.

How their research is transforming health care

Fei is currently affiliated with SC-TRIMH. Fei’s current research projects focus upon the development of smart miniature biosensors to monitor tissue and device function in vivo. The goal is to systematically establish the customizable and quantifiable surgery protocols to prevent or minimize osteolysis progression, based on the highly sensitive, embedded strain sensors, patient-specific biomechanical modeling, and cadaver/animal validation. Fei has extensive collaborations with the members at SC-TRIMH on a number of research topics. He currently collaborates with Drs. John Tokish at GHS and Hai Xiao at Clemson, conducting research on joint replacement surgeries. Fei is working together with Dr. Jeryl Jones at Clemson on in vivo testing of implant materials with high-performance embedded sensors. He also jointly works with Dr. Monica Cayouette at MUSC on dental implant researches, and with Drs. Hai Yao and Guigen Zhang at Clemson on musculoskeletal simulation and modeling.
