Summer Nursing Academic Program Advanced (SNAP 2.0) (Rising 9th-12th)
Course Pre-Requisites
- Must have successfully completed Clemson Summer Scholars SNAP Program. May exempt this prerequisite if credentialed as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
- Completion of the American Heart Association’s Basic Life Support (BLS) Training prior to course. (Current ) May complete online renewal prior to first day, if desired.
Course Description: To provide foundational knowledge of both theory and skills for Summer Scholars interested in pursuing an undergraduate nursing degree in a prelicensure baccalaureate program. This comprehensive course will consist of three components that must be successfully completed to achieve course completion.
Part One: Theory
Students will learn concepts and theories basic to the art and science of nursing. Concepts related to the physiological and psychosocial health needs of the individual are integrated. Legal and ethical roles of the professional nurse are emphasized. SNAP 2.0 aims at providing Summer Scholars with the fundamentals on which they can build technical and interpersonal expertise. Nursing process will provide the framework for applying the knowledge learned throughout this course. Additionally, students will be introduced to communication and interpersonal skills to prepare them to become effective members of a collaborative health care team. Critical thinking and decision-making will also be addressed as a guide for safe, competent, and skillful nursing practices.
Topical Outline:
- Fundamentals: introductory concepts including roles and responsibilities; legal issues; medical terminology, drug/dosage calculations, anatomy, and physiology
- Safety: controlling infection; preventing injuries; responding to emergencies
- Providing care: vital signs; health assessment techniques, sterile technique
- Transitioning from high school to college student
Part Two: Skills Lab
This component builds upon the theory portion of the Nursing Essentials session through in-person skills practice. Some of the skills you will perform with the assistance of your fellow students and instructor, e.g., taking vital signs such as blood pressure, auscultating heart sounds, breath sounds, bowel sounds.
Part Three: Clincial Knowledge
Upon successful completion of the theory and lab portion of this course, students must demonstrate clinical knowledge using experiential learning and clinical case study analysis, under the direct supervision of a licensed, professional registered nurse (SNAP 2.0 Faculty).
