In problematizing the prison industrial complex, this theoretical project was an adaptive reuse project of the Eastern State Penitentiary. Specifically, my project focuses on providing care for Black girls who disproportionately face disciplinary action that excludes them from traditional learning environments. I explored approaches of Hip-Hop architecture to create my design using color theory prominent in African American culture and translating adaptive reuse techniques into hip-hop verbiage. I also relied on overlaid images and collage to convey my narrative. This hub for restorative justice challenges us to reconsider punitive approaches especially as it regards minors and at-risk youth.
