Graves at this location

Estimated number of graves: Approximately 255+
Identified grave sites: 4 sites comprised of approximately 3+/- acres

The graves identified at the Clemson Experimental Forest (CEF) are in four locations populated with a mix of hardwoods and pines. The graves appear to date from about 150 years old to more than 200 years old.

While headstones mark some of the graves, others appear as depressions in the ground. Ground-penetrating radar and aerial drone LiDAR conducted in 2021 and 2022 identified 255 possible graves.

The CEF is comprised of 17,500 acres in Oconee, Pickens and Anderson Counties in the upper Piedmont of South Carolina. The present land base represents a portion of the 27,400 acres acquired by the federal government during land reclamation of the 1930s with transfer of ownership to Clemson in 1954.
