David Coombs’ research and teaching interests include nineteenth-century literature, the realist novel, and intellectual and conceptual history.
His current research project, “The Crisis Genre: The Victorian Historical Novel and the Unfinished Nineteenth Century,” brings together a conceptual history of crisis with a literary history of the development of the historical novel after Walter Scott. Crisis became a key concept in the modern philosophy of history during the Enlightenment and its revolutionary aftermath because it afforded a theory of systemically necessary transformation. This project explores the pressures brought to bear on such a theory by newly consolidated theories of deep time in the middle and late nineteenth century, amid skepticism about the pace and lasting significance of historical change. The Victorian historical novel is the literary genre that most sensitively registers these developments, since it remained indebted to Scott’s dynamic model of narrating history by anchoring the plot in a transformative historical crisis. “The Crisis Genre” reads the resulting formal strains and tensions in the historical novel after mid-century as active sites for re-imagining the philosophy of history in a moment when the scope of time and the historical present seemed to have suddenly, vertiginously expanded.
His first book, Reading with the Senses, traces the intellectual history of a scientific consensus, emerging in the nineteenth century, that divided sensory perception into three basic parts: stimulus (the force acting on the nerves); sensation (the feeling arising from the nerves’ response to the stimulus); and perception (the cognitive apprehension of the object causing the sensations). Arguing that perception should be understood as the interpretation of sensations, scientists compared it to the act of reading, creating new uncertainty about how reading a description of the world differs from experiencing it firsthand. Examining the ways the new science of sense perception was taken up in literature, science, and philosophy, the book argues that it ultimately transformed the understanding of how we read and what kind of knowledge about the world reading affords.
