Dr. Wueste was founding director of the Rutland Institute for Ethics at Clemson University. He stepped down as director after fifteen years, in the summer 2016, and returned to teaching and research. His research and writing focus on issues in three areas: practical and professional ethics, legal philosophy, and social and political philosophy. Wueste has a special interest in what ethicists can learn from legal philosophers and vice versa. His work has appeared in various journals including Cornell Law Review, Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, the Canadian Journal of Law and Jurisprudence, Teaching Ethics, Dimensions of Critical Care Nursing, Critical Reviews in Biomedical Engineering, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education, and The Annals of Thoracic Surgery. He is the author of the chapter on professional ethics in The Biomedical Engineering Handbook, 2nd edition, the chapter on biomedical ethics in the Encyclopedia of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, the editor of Professional Ethics and Social Responsibility (Rowman and Littlefield, 1994), and most recently, Teaching Ethics – Instructional Models, Methods and Modalities for University Studies (Rowan and Littlefield, 2021). In addition to teaching in the Department of Philosophy and Religion, Wueste teaches in two of Clemson’s Ph.D. Programs: Policy Studies and Healthcare Genetics. He served two terms as a member and served as Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics in the last two years of his second term. He has been a member of the Society for Ethics Across the Curriculum since its inception, is a member of its Executive Committee and proudly served two terms as its president.
Professional Development Seminars, Workshops: During his tenure as director of the Rutland Institute for Ethics (2001-2016) Wueste conducted professional development seminars and workshops for (a) college and university faculty as well as high school and middle school teachers and (b) licensed professionals. With faculty and teachers, the seminars/workshops focused on teaching ethics across the curriculum and/or academic integrity, responsible conduct of research, and research ethics. He did this work domestically at colleges and universities in Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, South Carolina, Texas, and the U.S. Territory of Guam, as well as abroad in Australia (New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia), Japan, Kuwait, and Mexico. The lion’s share of his work with professionals involved support from and collaboration with the South Carolina Board of Architectural Examiners and the American Institute for Architects (AIA), which provided professional continuing education credit to the participants. He also conducted workshops on professional ethics in engineering, civic design, law, and social work.
