With the Clemson University Department of Languages for 19 years, Ferrell has taught at all levels, including business German. He has also taught the summer immersion course (Clemson Language Intensive Program or CLIP) which he began leading in Aachen, Germany in the Summer of 2012. In addition, his duties have included adviser to the German Club and the German Professional Society. He has sat on the Language Department's committee for the Language and International Business Conference for which he coordinated five conferences. He has also been organizer of four Conferences on German in the Professions held each fall on the Clemson Campus. He served as director of the Language and International Business Program from 2017-2020. Within the profession, he also served as president of the South Carolina chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German from 2014-2016.
