Applied Clarinet Lessons

Dr. María Ortiz-Laboy was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and shares her passion for the clarinet on stage and in the classroom. She currently participates in the clarinet sections of the Long Bay Symphony Orchestra and the Aiken Symphony and has performed with orchestras in the South Carolina and Georgia area. In the United States, Dr. Ortiz-Laboy has performed as a soloist with the Virginia Blue Ridge Music Festival Orchestra under the baton of David Stewart Wiley. In Europe, she participated in the International Clarinet Summer Workshop in Domazlice, Czech Republic, under Ludmilla Peterkova in 2015. She also participated at the renowned orchestral conducting camp The Conductor's Institute of South Carolina under the tutelage of Dr. Donald Portnoy.

As an educator, Dr. Ortiz-Laboy is currently faculty at Clemson University, Clemson, SC as a clarinet lecturer, and South Carolina State University as clarinet professor. She is former faculty of Lander University, Greenwood, SC. She has presented workshops and clinics schools in the South Carolina area in preparation for college entrance auditions and SCBDA All-State. Recently, she has appeared as a lecturer at the Escuela Libre de Música de Mayagüez Virtual Porta de Sol Clarinet Festival, presenting a segment: "The Clarinet in Puerto Rico," talking about the history of the clarinet in Puerto Rico, musical and educational institutions that have influenced the teaching and composition of new works for the clarinet on the Island.

Her clarinet teachers include Maestra Kathleen Jones, Dr. Dawn Lindblade-Evans and Dr. Oskar Espina Ruiz at the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico; Dr. Kristina Jones and Amitai Valdi at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio; and Professor Joseph Eller at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, where Dr. Ortiz-Laboy wrote her dissertation entitled: “The Clarinet Repertoire in Puerto Rico: An Annotated Bibliography on Compositions Written for Clarinet by Puerto Rican Composers of the Twentieth and Twenty-first Centuries,” published by University of South Carolina Scholar Commons.
