Research Interests
Modern East Asia since 1860's; Oral history, Historiography/Historical Theory and Method, Memory Studies

Emma Nicolini is a graduate student and teaching assistant in the History MA Program. She graduated from Clemson University in 2019 with a Bachelors of Arts degree in History and East Asian Studies. Her interests include gender history, historical theory, methodology, and memory studies. In particular, she seeks to understand how methodologies of oral history can provide insight into the historical agency of women in Asian societies. Her current project explores how Japanese society views history, narrates time, and experiences historical trauma, specifically after World War II and how the official narrative and the archival logic omits war crimes and consequently invalidates the experiences of certain groups like enslaved and formerly enslaved women and their testimonies. She is currently maneuvering this area by researching accounts of surviving social groups from forgotten points of Japanese history, beginning with the “comfort women.” She is currently a TA for HIST 1730 West and World II.
