Matthew Girardeau is a first-year M.A. history student and teaching assistant for The West and the World. He received his associate degree from TriCounty Technical College in 2021 and a B.A. in history with a minor in Spanish studies from Clemson University in 2023. As an undergraduate, he completed research on the farm workers' labor movement of the 1960s and 1970s in the Southwestern United States and its cultural significance. His master's research interests are immigration and labor in the Southeastern United States and its effects on culture and society. He hopes to explore how industry revitalization in the Upstate of South Carolina has encouraged immigration and fostered a more diverse community.
