The Humanities at Clemson University

Clemson’s humanities students are prepared to be the leaders who make a difference in the world.

Clemson humanities programs are designed to ensure students gain historical perspective, become clear thinkers and learn how to pay careful attention to language. Such a broad-base curriculum involving advanced study of the arts, language, literature, history and philosophy educates students to think critically, solve problems creatively and identify opportunities.

At Clemson, the humanities include innovative undergraduate programs in English, history, modern languages, philosophy and religious studies, as well as interdisciplinary programs in language and international health, language and international trade, Pan African studies, women’s leadership, and world cinema. Master’s degrees are available to students in English and history, and a doctoral program is offered in rhetorics, communication, and information design.

Through a shared commitment to  language, critical thinking, historical perspec-tive, imaginative work, and questions of value in the creation, application, and preservation of knowledge, the Humanities address critical questions of contemporary concern and  prepare students for long-term career success.

Our humanities graduates go on to further success.

Among our English graduates are those who have been admitted to Ph.D. programs at the University of California-Irvine, Cornell, University of Michigan and Rutgers, been placed in the Peace Corps and received a Fulbright to study in China.

History graduates have become lawyers, entrepreneurs, teachers, writers, photojournalists, political consultants and military officers.

Recent language graduates have begun careers with Michelin, G.E., Walt Disney Company, Procter and Gamble and pursued post-graduate studies at Boston University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the London School of Economics.

Philosophy and religious studies graduates have gone on to study at Yale, Harvard and Stanford Law Schools, Duke Divinity School and to work in careers that include business, management, policy analysis and real estate.
