Prior to his retirement in 2003, Dr. Grady’s major teaching and research interest was in biological process engineering. His interests ranged from mathematical modeling of biological processes to the biodegradation of synthetic organic chemicals. He was very interested in the application of molecular biology tools to the study of community structure and dynamics in biological processes. With his students he also investigated the regulation of catabolic enzymes for the biodegradation of aromatic compounds in alternating aerobic-anoxic environments. He and his students developed a variety of respirometric-based tests for the quantification of biodegradation kinetics. He is senior author of the textbook Biological Wastewater Treatment.
Although Dr. Grady’s career focused on water pollution control, he has concluded that the greatest environmental challenge facing humankind is climate change. Consequently, since his retirement, he has studied the topic and frequently speaks about it.
Dr. Grady no longer teaches formal courses, but does participate in a number of seminars in EEES.
