I grew up in Summerville, SC and graduated from Summerville High School in 1986. I earned a B.S. in Science Teaching/Biological Sciences (Clemson University 1990), a M.Ed. in Secondary Education/Natural Sciences (Charleston Southern University 1992), and a Ph.D. in Microbiology (Clemson University 2002). Before entering graduate school to pursue my Ph.D. in microbiology, I taught in the public schools (one year in middle school and two years in high school ). During my time as Ph.D. graduate student, I worked as a Teaching Assistant for the introductory biology labs and tutored athletes. I returned to Clemson University as a temporary Lecturer in 2004 to teach the introductory biology labs. I was hired as a permanent Lecturer in 2007 to teach MICR 3050 General Microbiology and coordinate the corresponding labs. I was promoted to to the rank of Senior Lecturer in 2013 and the rank of Principal Lecturer in 2022.
