Competitions: Math and Science Olympiads

The Department of Physics and Astronomy facilitiates a number of competitions each year. To find out more about specific competitions, expand the accordions, below. As dates and details are determined for future contests, this site will be updated. For more information about competitions in general, email Catalina Marinescu or Jason Brown.

 

Competitions

  • Creative Inquiry Project — PHYS 3990

    This CI organizes math and science competitions for elementary, middle and high-school students. This is a fun way to experience the challenges and thrills of problem-solving and advanced learning.

  • Pre-College Math Competition: AMC 8

    Every year, the Mathematical Association of America hosts a series of national contests designed to challenge and strengthen the mathematical skills of the country’s young people. Every year, at thousands of schools in every state, more than 350,000 students are presented with a set of questions rich in content, designed to make them think and sure to leave them talking.

    The AMC 8 is for students in grades six – eight. The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills.

    • Registration deadline: Dec. 15, 2024.
    • Competition: 6 p.m. Jan. 23, 2025.
    • Location: Clemson campus, location TBA.

  • Pre-College Math Competition: AMC 10/12

    Every year, the Mathematical Association of America hosts a series of national contests designed to challenge and strengthen the mathematical skills of the country’s young people. Every year, at thousands of schools in every state, more than 350,000 students are presented with a set of questions rich in content, designed to make them think and sure to leave them talking.

    The AMC 10/12 is for students in grades nine–12. The AMC 10 is a 25-question, 75-minute, multiple choice examination in secondary school mathematics containing problems which can be understood and solved with algebra and geometry concepts. The AMC 12 is a 25-question, 75-minute, multiple choice examination in secondary school mathematics containing problems which can be understood and solved with pre-calculus concepts. Each AMC 10 and AMC 12 contest contain about 12 of the same math problems.

    • Registration deadline: Oct. 15, 2024.
    • Competition: 6 p.m. Nov. 6, 2024 (A) and 6 p.m. Nov. 12, 2024 (B).

  • Pre-College Math Competition: Math Kangaroo

    Math Kangaroo takes place every year on the third Thursday in March. All students from grades one through 12 are invited to participate. For additional information and to register, visit the Math Kangaroo USA website.

    • Registration deadline: Dec. 15, 2024.
    • Competition: 6 p.m. March 20, 2025.
    • Location: TBD.

  • USA Biolympiad

    The USA Biolympiad open exam is a 50-minute, nationwide online, multiple-choice exam available to any high school biology student (grades 9–12). Students who score in the top 10% are invited to take The USABO semifinal exam. More information about the USABO can be found on the USA Biolympiad website.

    • Registration deadline: Nov. 8, 2024.
    • Competition: 4 p.m. Feb. 6, 2025.
    • Location: Online.

  • U.S. Physics Team F=ma

    The F=ma exam is a 75-minute, online, multiple-choice exam for high school students. The top 300-400 scorers will be invited to take the US Physics Olympiad exam, the qualifying exam for the U.S. Physics Team. More information about the F=ma exam can be found on the American Association of Physics Teachers website.
