Academic Coaching Roles and Responsibilities
Roles

There are two key participants in academic coaching: the student and the academic coach.
In this student-driven process, the coach partners with the student to support the student in developing the mindset, skills and behaviors needed to achieve academic success. While it isn't required, we recommend you meet regularly with your academic coach, offering you an ongoing source of both individualized support and accountability.
Student Responsibilities
When you meet with your academic coach, you have several responsibilities to ensure you get the most out of your coaching experience. Doing the following will help you benefit from your coaching session.
- Actively engage by sharing your thoughts, discussing your goals and asking questions.
- Communicate clearly and honestly with your coach about your goals and challenges.
- Maintain an open mind and a willingness to try new things.
- Follow through on the strategies, actions and intentions you discussed with your coach.
- Be on time for your appointment.
Please note: If you know you will not be able to attend your scheduled session, be sure to cancel the appointment as soon as possible. Also, please note that if you do not arrive for your scheduled appointments within five minutes (for a 30-minute appointment) or within 10 minutes (for a 45-minute appointment) of your start time, you will be marked as a "no-show" and your appointment will be canceled.
Academic Coach Responsibilities
Your academic coach has several key responsibilities in ensuring you receive the support and guidance you need. You can count on your coach to:
- Demonstrate unconditional positive regard for you.
- Communicate clearly and honestly with you.
- Encourage you to reflect on and learn from your past choices to enhance your future performance.
- Help you determine the skills and behaviors you want to enhance.
- Refer you to appropriate campus resources that can benefit you.
- Model the stated values of the Academic Success Center.
Privacy/Confidentiality
Conversations with your academic coach are private. Your coach will not share what you discussed in a coaching session without your permission unless your coach (1) believes you or someone else is in danger, (2) learns of a violation of the Clemson Student Conduct Code or (3) learns of a violation of Clemson's sexual misconduct policy. In all of these instances, your coach is required to report them to the appropriate University official.
Though your privacy will always be respected, please note that your coach works as a part of a team and may consult with other team members to ensure that you are provided with the best possible service. Your coach may request your permission to invite another coach to observe your meetings for training and professional development purposes.
