Academic Recovery Program

Clemson’s academic recovery program aims to help students on academic probation (cumulative GPA below 2.0) return to good academic standing by:

  • Focusing holistically on all dimensions of their well-being
  • Encouraging students to adopt learning, self-management and growth mindset strategies and set goals to support their success
  • Connecting students with success and well-being campus resources
  • Communicating important information to students throughout the semester
  • Normalizing the probation process through sharing stories of students who returned to good academic standing

Academic Success Center staff collaborate with the college academic advisors and other student services departments to provide students with personalized support throughout their time on academic probation.

Academic Recovery Program Initiatives

Success Matters

Success Matters consists of interactive online modules focused on success strategies and resources, meeting with your academic advisor to discuss your success plan and campus resources, and regular communication throughout the semester.

CU 2100

Clemson University designed CU 2100, a three-credit-hour graded course, to help students develop academic resilience and success skills. This course starts in Fall 2025.

Services Lead to Success

Students who engaged in Success Matters, as well as other ASC services, such as academic coaching, tutoring, PAL and success strategy workshops, were more likely to return to good standing at the end of the semester than students who did not engage in Success Matters or other ASC services.

“I think the most important thing is to realize that you are not alone, that this happens to other students as well, and it is not a permanent thing. You can still get back to a great academic standing as long as you are willing to put in the work.”

Policies and Resources

  • Academic Eligibility Policy

While on academic probation, students must meet one of the three eligibility criteria to remain eligible to take classes at Clemson. To return to good academic standing, your cumulative Clemson GPA must be a 2.0 or above.

Students who wish to enroll in fewer than 12 credit hours while on academic probation must receive approval to be enrolled part-time. Email UGSEligibility@clemson.edu to request a part-time enrollment agreement form.

Academic eligibility can be complex, so be sure to talk to your academic advisor and reach out to UGSEligibility@clemson.edu with any questions.

  • Financial Aid and Scholarship Eligibility

Determining eligibility for financial aid and scholarships is a separate process from Clemson’s academic eligibility policy. To remain eligible for financial aid each semester, Clemson students must meet GPA, pacing and maximum timeframe requirements. Failure to meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements can result in loss of financial aid. You can submit an appeal if you have extenuating circumstances.

Many Clemson scholarships and those for South Carolina residents also have specific GPA and/or credit hour requirements.

If you have any questions about financial aid, contact the Office of Financial Aid at finaid@clemson.edu or 864-656-2280.

  • GPA Calculator

Use Clemson’s GPA calculator to determine the impact of course grades and academic forgiveness on your cumulative GPA. You will need to access your academic transcript in iROAR to use this tool.
