Research Interests: Sustainable urban form, Meaning in built environments, and Design implementation strategies

Professor Schurch is completing his sixth year as a Professor of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning at Clemson University. Prior to joining the Clemson faculty he served ten years as the Director of the Landscape Architecture Program at the University of Oklahoma where he founded and directed the Center for Community Based Projects. He has been a senior faculty member with tenure at Clemson, OU, Ball State, and Mississippi State. Dr. Schurch earned the Ph.D in Urban Design and Planning from the University of Washington and the Master of Landscape Architecture from California State Polytechnic University Pomona, where he worked closely with landscape architect and ecologist John Lyle. He is licensed in landscape architecture (California) and a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects and American Institute of Certified Planners. He practiced landscape architecture for several years prior to entering higher education. Professor Schurch’s research activity is disseminated at professional and academic conferences and the academic and popular press where he has published newspaper articles, reviews, book chapters, professional journal articles, and scholarly work in refereed journals. His areas of interest concern sustainable urban landscapes, urban form, and meaning in built environments. He is currently completing a manuscript on the topic of sustainable urban form an international book publisher.
