You belong in the School of Architecture
At the School of Architecture, we are committed to the value of each person’s uniqueness and lived experiences, knowing that their perspectives directly inform their approach to learning and the design of the built environment.
Through our hands-on service-learning studios, Fluid Campus programs, direct action through student organizations, continued outreach of our Emerging and Summer Scholar programs and Project Pipeline, the School of Architecture is committed to the advancement of diversity and cultural competency by providing a place where all students, faculty and staff are free of harassment, aggression and discrimination.
We are committed to building a community where all are encouraged to share their opinions, thoughts and ideas without fear of discrimination or attack and where it is okay to take risks through experiential learning opportunities. Therefore, we are actively addressing our accessibility to marginalized and underserved communities so that, at minimum, our students, faculty and staff reflect the population of the state of South Carolina. While we have yet to reach our goal, our programs are continually growing in diversity and several of the School of Architecture programs are now majority female. Additionally, our historic preservation program is actively working with and telling the story of marginalized communities in the Lowcountry. Each semester, we intentionally choose to use an inclusive view to evaluate the historical and cultural significance of the built environment.
Because of your gender, race, ethnicity, culture, nationality, sexual orientation, disability status or socio-economic factors, you belong here. We know that diverse backgrounds, lived experiences and belief systems enrich our classrooms and the future of the built environment. Each new student allows us to approach issues and challenges in architecture, landscape architecture, historic preservation and resilient urban design from new and exciting perspectives, helping us expand how society experiences the world around it.
We invite you to join us as we work to push the boundaries of the built environment so that all people can engage with and craft the world around them without fear. We are the School of Architecture; build your future here.
