Ava Rooney
Rising Junior Horticulture
Landscan
Lodi, CA
My name is Ava Rooney and I am a rising junior Horticulture student who had the incredible opportunity to work an internship this summer at a company called Landscan in California. I worked on a block of Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in Lodi, California. Landscan is a high tech company that advances in engineering, agronomy, and data science which provide great promise for optimizing agricultural production. Landscan has worked on many projects all over the world mapping soil of many different sites and crops. My role this summer was specifically working with wine grapes and solving how environmental factors influence the chemistry of the grapes. In order to collect this data, my fellow intern and I walked down 90 rows of vines collecting data by clipping individual vines off of each plant and measuring lengths of nodes, internodes, and total length of the vines. We then would collect the berry clusters and perform berry analysis by picking berries off the clusters and taking weights and volumes. I had a remarkable experience working on this project and have gained so much knowledge that I am proud and confident to carry into my future.
Sebastian Sanchez
Rising Junior, Horticulture
University of Cordoba
Cordoba, Spain
Working as a research intern at the University of Cordoba was inspiring. I had the opportunity to be a part of the Future Leaders Obtaining Research and Extension Career Experiences (FLORECE) program this summer, which allowed me to obtain eye-opening experiences living and working in Cordoba, Spain. I took part in the FLORECE program because I wanted to gain a more worldly view of agricultural challenges and expose myself to a new culture. At the University, I worked on a project to discover the role of silicon on sunflower potassium uptake, learning various lab techniques. I often assisted other graduate students with their projects where I could and strived to stay curious to immerse myself in the research world. I am forever grateful for this internship opportunity, granting me a plethora of knowledge in and outside the lab. I am glad to have been exposed to such a diverse group of people in Spain and feel inspired to learn more Spanish, which I know, along with this experience, will open new doors for further opportunities in horticulture.

During my time I assisted in pollinations, using the flow cytometer to determine ploidy, managing our germplasm collection, and plenty more. On top of all that we frequently have horticulture professionals visit our station to tour around and see the latest exciting happenings. This summer we attended various relevant conferences such as the Southeastern Plant Symposium and the Perennial Plant Association/Speaking Of Gardening Conference. I couldn’t be more grateful for a summer full of new people and new experiences!
