About

Student-Centered

General Engineering at Clemson utilizes a model called "SCALE-UP," first developed at NC State by Robert Beichner as a way to teach Physics. SCALE-UP stands for Student-Centered Activities for Large Enrollment Undergraduate Programs.

The project focuses on bringing students together to work as teams on hands-on, interactive assignments. Sitting at round tables allows each team member equal ability to contribute as they engage in discussions. This collaborative study will enable increases in problem-solving, conceptual understanding, and overall attitude. As collective dialogue increases, the rate of failure decreases.

Academic Excellence

Our focus is on delivering the number one educational experience so that our students are on the path to success, both academically and professionally. Such initiatives as the General Engineering Learning Community, for those underprepared in math skills, to ENGR 1020, where we introduce material on empathy engineering to help students understand how they can have a meaningful impact on the lives of others.

The annual Major Discovery Night gives students the opportunity to interact with alumni, faculty, and staff from each engineering major to help students determine which major best aligns with their interests as they plan for sophomore year and pick a major.

Lasting Impacts

General Engineering Lecturer and Summer Scholars Instructor Andrew Neptune is a recipient of the CECAS Byars Prize Award for Excellence in Teaching. Each year, Dr. Neptune joins the Summer Scholars team to introduce students to the foundations of General Engineering through fun lessons and hands-on experiments. This award is given to CECAS faculty who have demonstrated excellence in the quality of recent achievements involving teaching philosophy, methodology, and self-assessment aimed at improvement.

Our faculty and staff are the heart of the program - with everyone working to provide the students with the best academic experience possible.

Hema profile

“Over the years that I have taught, I have thoroughly enjoyed interacting with students, answering their numerous questions, and empowering them. My greatest reward as a teacher is to see my students succeed. Having navigated both the research and educational streams of academia, I am grateful to be part of the General Engineering Department at Clemson University. This position gives me the opportunity to teach the next generation of engineers, who will, in turn, go out and serve the planet!”
