Frequently Asked Questions

The General Engineering Advising Center advises first-year engineering students in the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences (CECAS). We assist students with course scheduling, registration, the process of taking courses elsewhere (usually in the summer) and other academic-related tasks to ensure success throughout the first year. Students should work directly with their assigned advisor for appointments and advising dates and deadlines.

  • Am I required to meet with an advisor before registering for the upcoming semester?

Preregistration advising typically begins in mid-September and mid-January. Currently enrolled General Engineering students will receive an email from their academic advisor at least 6 weeks prior to registration informing them to schedule an advising appointment. Students must have a preregistration appointment in order to register for courses.

  • Can I just stop by to see my advisor? What is the best way to make an appointment to see an advisor?

With the high volume of student inquiries, especially during peak times, it is always best for a student to have an appointment. Using CU Navigate to make appointments is the best way to ensure a meeting with your advisor.

Advisors are available to meet with you in person or virtually between 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. We are closed on weekends as well as University and state holidays.

  • I am not certain who my assigned advisor is. How can I find this information?

All students can view their advisor in iROAR. Visit iroar.clemson.edu and click "Student Self-Service"> "Advising Student Profile".

  • I haven't heard from my advisor, and I know it is time to be advised. What should I do?

There are many reasons why communication may not be reaching you regarding the preregistration process.

    • Are you checking your Clemson email?
    • Make sure messages are not in your junk/spam folder.
    • Look in CU Navigate for any messages.

If you are still not receiving emails, reach out to your assigned advisor by going to their campus office, calling their campus phone number, or emailing them. Please give us 24 business hours to respond, and then you can reach out to geadvising@clemson.edu if you still need help.

  • Where do I register? Where do I find my Registration PIN?

Look for an email from your advisor on how to schedule your pre-advising appointment. You should meet with your Advisor in a timely manner, verify that you do not have any holds and know when your time ticket opens so that there is no delay in your registration process. You can register for classes in iROAR>Student Registration Self-Service.

During orientation, the PIN is not needed. Afterward, each semester, your Registration PIN will be given to you by your advisor during advising. Please schedule an appointment so that you receive your Registration PIN before registration opens.

After advising, you can find your Registration PIN and course recommendations in the advising summary report for your appointment in CU Navigate. On the CU Navigate website, you will find your advising summary report under the Reports tab. On the app, you will find them under Documents.

  • What if I have a hold?

You can check for holds in the top right corner of your student profile. This can be accessed via iROAR>Student Self-Service>Advising Student Profile>Holds. The hold notification will inform you if the hold will prevent registration and who to contact for assistance. It's best if holds are cleared quickly to avoid complications.

For additional information regarding holds, please view the Registration Checklist information.

  • What if I receive an error message while registering?

Some error messages are self-explanatory (i.e., class is full or time conflict). In these cases, search for another section. Be sure there are no restrictions regarding the class, such as special approval or field of study restrictions. For additional information regarding error messages, please view Common Registration Errors.

If you are still not sure what an error message means, you can contact your advisor for clarification.

  • What if all the sections for a class I need are full?

If appropriate, you may wish to submit a closed course request (iROAR>Student Self-Service>Request a Seat in a Closed Course), join the waitlist or reach out to the Registration Coordinators. Review your advising notes to see if alternate courses were provided. Your advising notes may include instructions regarding your next steps for specific courses.

Please reach out to your advisor if needed.

  • Can my advisor override me into a course?

"No, general engineering advisors are not registration coordinators, so they can not add you to a course or provide overrides.

  • What should I do if I am having a difficult time registering for a full-time schedule?

Check through the backup options identified on your advising worksheet. Explore alternative general education options if needed. Consider adding courses for a minor; you can consult with your advisor on how to fit those in.

  • How can I track my academic progress?

Degree audits are available online at any time. They are updated nightly for accuracy. You can check your degree audit online by following these steps: Visit iroar.clemson.edu and click "Student Self-Service"> "Degree Works"

  • How do I change my major?

The minimum cumulative grade-point average is 2.00 unless otherwise stated by the major. Some majors specify a higher minimum grade-point average or additional requirements. Visit the CECAS Change of Major page for more details.

Engineering students can initiate a Change of Academic Program request through iROAR upon completion of the core courses and requirements of the intended engineering degree program. Students admitted into an engineering degree program will follow the curriculum in effect at the time of admission into General Engineering unless otherwise approved by the specific department.

Enrolled students who wish to change from a non-engineering major into any engineering major must first change their major to General Engineering. Students cannot change directly into a degree-granting engineering major and will need to make an Explore General Engineering appointment in CU Navigate to meet with the GE advisor.

  • How do I declare a minor?

Check out the minor requirements and make sure that you have room in your schedule. Once you have determined that you can meet all minor requirements, students must submit an Undergraduate Change of Program request in the Student Records tab in iROAR.
