Safety Tips

Carfentanil is a powerful derivative of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid produced from morphine. Carfentanil is approximately 100 times more potent than fentanyl and 10,000 times more potent than morphine. This drug is not approved for use in humans in any capacity. It is typically found in veterinary medicine to sedate large animals, primarily elephants. In fact, the drug is so powerful that when veterinarians handle carfentanil, they use protective gear so they don’t breathe it in or absorb it through their skin. Carfentanil can resemble the appearance of powdered cocaine or heroin. It has also been laced in counterfeit prescription pills.

Carfentanil and other fentanyl-related substances affect the body in a matter of minutes. A dose the size of a grain of salt can rapidly lead to an overdose and death. In the case of suspected exposure, call 911 immediately. For more information, click here.

1. Report suspicious persons or criminal activity to the Clemson University Police at 864-656-2222.
2. Keep your car doors and windows locked at all times.
3. Use locks on lockers and bicycles.
4. Attend crime prevention programs.
5. Take responsibility to protect yourself and your fellow students.

1. Avoid walking alone at night. Call Tiger Transit at 656-3333 to arrange for a ride from an escort van between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. daily.
2. Stay in well-lit, populated areas.
3. If you are confronted by an attacker, scream loudly and try to run to a safe area.
4. If you feel threatened use the blue light emergency phones located around campus or call 911 from a cell phone.

1. Always lock your vehicle so entry to the trunk cannot be made from the inside.
2. Secure all valuable in the trunk of your car or remove them from your car.
3. Have your keys in hand before you get to your vehicle.
4. Park in well-lighted area.
5. Park in lots more frequently used by others.
6. Look in your vehicle before you get inside.
7. Car-pool if you can, have a friend, parent or relative drop you off on campus.
8. Report all suspicious persons or activity to the Clemson University Police immediately at 864-656-2222.
9. Do not assist occupants of disabled vehicles. Continue driving and call on your cell phone or find a nearby phone to call 911 to report the disabled vehicle.
10. If your car breaks down, raise the hood, lock yourself in the car and call 911 or private vehicle assistance, if possible. If someone stops to help, stay in your locked car and open your window a crack to talk.
11. Never leave your windows cracked or your convertible top down.
12. Be alert, be aware, do not be a victim.

6. If you feel you are in danger, attract attention anyway you can. Don't be reluctant to scream and run.

8. Never get into a stranger's vehicle.

10. Emergency (blue light) phones are located around campus for your convenience.
11. CU Police, Student Health Services and the Counseling Center are all excellent resource centers for safety information.

1. Close and lock all office doors when you leave, open doors invites theft.
2. Keep cash, checks, credit cards, keys, and books with you at all times, never leave them unattended.
3. Write your name and an I.D. number, in pen, on the inside of your book's cover.
4. Store computers, lab equipment and audiovisual equipment, when not in use, in a locked office or classroom.
5. Register valuables with CUPD via tool.

1. Lock your door when you leave the room, even if you will be gone only for a minute. It takes about eight seconds for someone to walk into an open room and remove an item.
2. List only initials and last name on mail box.
3. Keep all entrances well illuminated.
4. If someone is prowling outside your residence or loitering in the vicinity of your building or room, turn on several lights call the police and Residence Life staff.
5. Never leave purses, wallets, jewelry, and other valuables unattended in laundry rooms, pool or kitchens areas.
6. Don't leave your desk or office keys, personal identification or building-access cards in unsecured areas.
7. Make a list of your valuables with a description and serial numbers and keep it on file in your room. Write your name on or in text books to reduce theft.
8. When entering a secure area, don't let anyone "tailgate" in behind you. Make them show their ID if you don't know them.
9. Never prop open any exterior entry door to your room, this compromises everyone's safety.
10. Never let a stranger into your room.
11. Do not give personal information to strangers on the telephone.
12. Keep all or your personal information secure (home address, Social Security number, access PINs).
13. Never give your phone number to a stranger.
14. Never light candles or use open flames in your room.
15. Do not enter your home or apartment if you find a door or window open, or if it has been burglarized.
16. When you are home and someone attempts to break into your home or apartment, call the police, and lock doors between you and intruder.

1. Cross the street.
2. Change directions.
3. Keep looking back, so the person will know you are aware of their presence.
4. Go to a well-lighted populated area.
5. Notice as many physical details as possible, so you can describe the person to the police.
6. Always report the incident to the police.

2. Always ask who is knocking before opening the door.
3. Never prop open locked exterior building doors.

Any monitoring of crime off campus is done by the agency of jurisdiction where the crime took place; however, we are usually advised by the local agencies involved and offer any assistance available. Further, Clemson University Police is in daily contact with the Clemson Police Department via radio, and daily bulletins of crimes within the jurisdiction.
