Phone Scam

The Clemson University Police Department (CUPD) wants to warn the Clemson community about a phone scam targeting parents of Clemson students, in which suspects pose as law enforcement to coerce the parents into giving them money.

The scam may have slightly different variations but typically involves a caller contacting a parent of a Clemson student and claiming to be a member of CUPD or the sheriff’s department. The caller will claim that they have arrested the student and that the parent needs to send money to secure the student’s release.

The caller may use the name of actual law enforcement officers and may disguise their phone number to make it look like they are calling from CUPD. Neither CUPD nor any legitimate law enforcement agency will ever call someone and demand money.

What should I do if I receive a similar call?

  • Hang up. The best way to protect yourself is simply to hang up and do not provide any information to the caller.
  • Contact CUPD. If you believe you have been targeted by this type of scam, contact CUPD at 864-656-2222
