Tik Tok: Are you in Control of Your Time?

Venyke Harley

According to Benjamin Franklin, “Lost time is never found again.” During New Year’s Eve of 2019, most of us were probably celebrating and contemplating how we would better use our time in the decade to come. Who would have ever imagined the upcoming decade would usher in challenges never experienced during our lifetimes? The stressors would impact our busy lives in ways we never envisioned.

Since 2020, everyone in the entire world has experienced unprecedented strains on their time. The strains have resulted in burn-out, increased depression and anxiety, job loss and the loss of relationships. Did you know that if you live to be 80 years old, you will live 4000 weeks? In his book, “Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals,” Oliver Burkeman states, “The average human life span is absurdly, terrifyingly, insultingly short.” Join us in this session on time management as we explore techniques to help you redeem your time at work and at home.

Time management and organization skills provide individuals with what they need to balance their work and personal life. Organizational skills help employees take control of their calendar, work area and day-to-day calendar.

This session will cover:

  • Time wasters
  • Time management tips
  • Methods to improve productivity
  • Ways to improve attention

Dr. Kimberly Baker

Have you ever been sick from a foodborne illness? One in six Americans gets sick from a foodborne illness each year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that the two leading causes of foodborne illness are eating raw or undercooked meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs and keeping potentially hazardous food at unsafe temperatures for too long. As Extension staff, we often serve meals during multi-hour programs and events, and some may include cooking items on the menu. Everyone must understand how to safely cook, handle, and serve food during programs and events to prevent participants from getting sick from a foodborne illness. This breakout session will provide an overview of foodborne illnesses and teach you the best practices to follow to serve food safely at your program or event to reduce the risk of a foodborne illness outbreak.

This session will reframe conflict into a positive force and cover how to make conflict healthy, productive, and manageable. First, we will discuss why to engage in conflict and how to mitigate the destructive impact conflict can have on our wellbeing, our relationships, and our workplaces. Then we will discuss when to engage in conflict and when it is actually a better choice to step away. Finally, we will discuss how to engage in conflict and some tools and strategies that you can apply to the conflicts you are dealing with today. The session will take a practical approach and will include an exercise to demonstrate the concepts presented.
