Which catalog do students follow?
A student’s catalog year determines their General Education Curriculum. The specific courses addressing each learning outcome in the General Education Curriculum are subject to change, and these courses are identified in the most recent undergraduate catalog. To learn more about a student’s catalog year, please see the policy described in the most recent catalog under Academic Regulations -> Change of Curriculum Year.

Under what conditions should students request a course substitution?
Every Clemson student has an assigned catalog year, and their degree requirements should be followed according to that catalog year. Students must follow the General Education Curriculum described for their catalog year. However, the courses that address different categories (or learning outcomes) of the General Education curriculum may change slightly from year to year. For this reason, it is important to review the most recent catalog when determining whether a specific course addresses a specific General Education category (or learning outcome) required in a student's General Education Curriculum.
Substitutions may be Necessary in the Following Situations:
- In rare instances, the most recent catalog available when registering for a course has that course listed in a General Education category, but the appropriate General Education Banner course attribute doesn't show after the student took the course. In this case, the course may have changed categories between the time that the student registered for the course and the time they took the course. Similarly, a Clemson course may have changed categories between the time a student took an equivalent course at another institution and the time that student transferred to Clemson. In either case, work with the student to complete a course/requirement substitution request via iROAR.
- In rare instances, a student may have taken a course that was previously approved for a General Education category but is not yet listed in the appropriate General Education section of the catalog. In such cases, work with the student to complete a course/requirement substitution request via iROAR.
- In some instances, a student may have taken a course at another institution that lacks a specific Clemson course equivalency but may address a Clemson general education learning outcome. In such instances, please work with the student to complete a course/requirement substitution via iRoar. Like any request for a course that has not already been reviewed by those academically qualified to do so, the syllabus should be uploaded as a note in CU Navigate so that the syllabus can be reviewed for fulfilling our General Education requirements.
- Information about submitting a course substitution can be found on the Registrar's website.

Will we have to change all of our degree maps?
The General Education Committee helps to set the courses and learning outcome areas, but does not set the sequencing of courses. Departments and degree programs should look at their degree maps to see if and where adjustments need to be made. (Click here for the guide shared at the April 2021 Undergraduate Curriculum Committee meeting.) Unless there are specific reasons for limiting students to specific general education courses or course order, flexibility is encouraged.
