Visual elements beyond photography are necessary components in visual communication. Graphics and illustration can provide visual solutions for more abstract ideas and communication points that photography cannot.

Illustration Approach

Illustration can be a useful tool for visualizing very complex and conceptual ideas. When illustrating, look for ways to tell a parallel story with illustrated visuals to ensure that they are thoughtful and complement the text well.

When illustrating a storytelling piece, the approach should match closely with the overall theme of the story to ensure that the narrative is concise. Look for ways to tie the concept of the story into the spot illustrations throughout the piece. Consider how the illustration can tell a direct or separate-but-parallel story to what’s written.

Collage

The collage illustration approach involves layering photography, artwork or graphics and the composition of them together to create a new meaning. This process requires color correction and often the integration of texture. The key to collage illustration is depth and composition. The arrangement of elements on a canvas and from foreground to background will ultimately determine its success.

Line Illustration

The line art illustration approach involves outlining the contour of the subject of the illustration, often in a single color and consistent stroke weight. Line art works well for situations where flat artwork is desired. It can be used in a wide range of sizes and creates a more technical visual aesthetic.

Hand-Drawn/Sketched

The hand-drawn or sketched illustration approach involves recreating the subject of the illustration with analog or digital drawing methods. Styles of hand-drawn or sketch imagery can range from realistic/traditional to simplified/casual.
