The Pate Fellowship: A Transformative Student Research Experience

The Pate Fellowship is a prestigious and competitive award designed to support undergraduate or graduate students in conducting hands-on research at the Baruch Institute of Coastal Ecology and Forest Science (BICEFS). This unique opportunity immerses students in a dynamic coastal environment, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to become future scientists, conservationists, and resource managers.

This fellowship lasts for 13 weeks from June-August, with some flexibility in the start and end dates. The fellowship requires relocation to Georgetown, South Carolina, to work at BICEFS.

  • About the Pate Foundation

The Pate Foundation is committed to enhancing educational opportunities through research and outreach, fostering a deeper understanding of the intricate relationships between people and the environment. Established to support the next generation of environmental leaders, the foundation provides students with firsthand experience in coastal forest ecosystems, where they can explore interactions between soil, water, vegetation, wildlife, and human activity.

By engaging in meaningful research, Pate Fellows gain valuable insights that prepare them to make informed decisions in natural resource management and environmental policy, shaping the future of our coastal landscapes.

  • What the Fellowship Offers
    • A hands-on research experience guided by faculty at BICEFS, addressing real-world environmental challenges.
    • Communal housing accommodations, fostering collaboration with fellow researchers.
    • A minimum stipend of $5,120 to cover meals and living expenses during the research period, along with health and retirement benefits for temporary staff as provided by Clemson University
    • The opportunity to share research findings with the local community at the end of the summer, reinforcing the connection between science and society.

This is more than just a fellowship—it’s a stepping stone toward a career in environmental science and sustainability. If you are passionate about making a difference and eager to gain field and laboratory experience, we encourage you to apply for the Pate Fellowship and become part of a community dedicated to understanding and preserving our coastal ecosystems.
