Learn more about Global Black Studies
The Global Black Studies program provides a framework to encourage intellectual discourse on the African and African American experience. Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach, Global Black Studies grounds students in the histories, cultures, literature and traditions of Africans and how they impacted the various regions where they came to reside since the 16th century. The program offers a broad spectrum of courses, such as history, communication, theater, sociology, nursing, and political science, which help students shape their major to fit their particular future interest.

“Javaria graduated from high school in 2020 and is currently a senior majoring in Global Black Studies with a minor in Cluster Social Sciences. She states: ‘I chose this major because it offered me untold perspectives on global communities and the ways history shapes modern-day politics. A panel discussion during my sophomore year in Dr. Roland’s introductory course on Global Black Studies inspired me to switch my major to Global Black Studies, with both the panelists and Dr. Roland playing a key role in that decision. This program has not only deepened my understanding of social justice and systemic inequalities, but it also helped me secure a position at a social justice nonprofit—aligning with my long-term career goals. My studies have put me on a path toward advocating for underrepresented communities and have provided me with the knowledge and skills to create meaningful change in an ever changing world.’”

“MiKayla Metz is from Columbia, SC and graduated from Spring Valley High school in 2020. She is a junior Global Black Studies major double minoring in Public Policy and Community & City Planning and Development. In her words: “To me, the best part of being a Global Black Studies major is the variety of course offerings and opportunities. This June some of us traveled to St. Croix for a conference and it was my first time traveling to a Black country. I chose to major in Global Black Studies one from a personal interest in exploring our culture and literature but also as a stepping stone to my career goals of activism work, writing, and carving out my own path."”
