M.S. Program
As medical technology has rapidly developed over the past four decades, the demand for qualified bioengineers has dramatically increased. A bioengineering master's degree can prepare you for a career in industry or research in a number of fields. Recent graduates are now employed with leading industry firms, while others have pursued advanced graduate studies.
Established in 1967, our M.S. in Bioengineering program offers a thesis and non-thesis option; both options equip students with skills and knowledge to pursue careers in the field of bioengineering. The thesis option prepares students to conduct research in bioengineering, while the non-thesis track prepares graduates for employment in bioengineering industries.
Offered at Clemson University’s main campus, the program can be completed in as little as two semesters when pursued as part of the Combined B.S.to Graduate program.

It is the responsibility of the student to be aware of and complete all BIOE Department and Graduate School requirements for the M.S. degree. Students graduating should refer to the deadlines listed on the Graduate School website.
Students pursuing the Master of Science in Bioengineering complete a set of 3 core courses before selecting coursework based on one of five emphasis areas, including biomaterials engineering, regenerative medicine, bioelectrical engineering, biomechanical engineering, cellular and molecular engineering.
Masters Degree, Thesis option
The Masters in Bioengineering thesis option requires 24 hours of graduate credit coursework and a minimum of six credit hours of master thesis research (BIOE 8910). Of the course credits, the following are required
- BIOE 6150 - Research Principles and Concepts 1 Credits
- BIOE 8000 - Seminar in Bioengineering Research 1 Credit (up to two credits)
- BIOE 8460 - Biomedical Basis for Engineered Replacement 3 Credits
Masters Degree, Non-Thesis option
The Master of Science in Bioengineering (M.S. non-thesis) program requires a minimum of 30 credit hours and does not include a research requirement. The non-thesis option can include no more than six credit hours of non-thesis Independent Study in Bioengineering (BIOE 8920) and/or internship (BIOE 8900) at an approved external location.
