Undergraduate Awards

The S. W. Shalaby Outstanding Bioengineering Sophomore Award is dedicated to Dr. Shalaby's contributions to the field of bioengineering as the inventor of absorbable sutures. This award is made annually to a promising sophomore in the Department of Bioengineering and places primary emphasis on scholarship and creativity, with additional emphasis on professional and extracurricular activities. The student's name will be engraved on a permanent plaque in Rhodes Hall.

The Larry S. Bowman Outstanding Bioengineering Junior Award was established in 2008 by Blue Ridge Orthopedics. The award is dedicated to Dr. Larry S. Bowman's contributions to the field of bioengineering in Sports Medicine and his continuing support of the department. This award is made annually to a promising junior in the Department of Bioengineering and places primary emphasis on scholastic excellence and leadership. The student's name will be engraved on a permanent plaque in Rhodes Hall.

The Poly-Med Outstanding Bioengineering Senior Award was established in 2009 and is made annually to a promising graduating senior in the Department of Bioengineering and places primary emphasis on scholarship and creativity, with additional emphasis on professional and extracurricular activities. The student's name will be engraved on a permanent plaque in Rhodes Hall.

The Barry W. Sauer Bioengineering Undergraduate Researcher Award was established in 2010 in memory of Dr. Barry W. Sauer, former Professor of Bioengineering at Clemson University, who fostered innovation and creativity in all students. Dr. Sauer's endless passion for research and discovery served as a catalyst for biomaterials laboratory development for students to conduct independent research. This award is given annually to an undergraduate student who has been recognized for conducting outstanding research during the school year.

The Jonathan Black Undergraduate Leadership in Bioengineering Award was established in 2011 in honor of Dr. Jonathan Black, Hunter Professor Emeritus of Bioengineering at Clemson University. This award will be given annually to an outstanding undergraduate student in Bioengineering for leadership and service to the department, in addition to scholastic excellence.

The C. William Hall Departmental Honors Award was established in 2017 to honor the most outstanding Bioengineering Departmental Honor student for fostering research, leadership, and/or service beyond the department and its borders and beyond the regular undergraduate research duties, in addition to scholastic excellence.

The R. Larry Dooley Entrepreneurship Award was established in 2016 in recognition of Dr. Dooley's legacy as a mentor and innovator. The student's name will be engraved on a permanent plaque in the Rhodes Annex.

The Eugene M. Langan III Service Award was established in 2020 in recognition of Dr. Langan's outstanding dedication and service to the Department of Bioengineering. Dr. Langan is a world-renowned vascular surgeon and scientist who exemplifies service promoting and supporting the field of biomedical engineering, the Department of Bioengineering, its students, and its faculty. The student's name will be engraved on a permanent plaque in the Rhodes Annex.

The Melissa McCullough Diversity Champion Award was established in 2021 in honor and memory of Dr. Melissa McCullough, staff member, Ph.D. graduate in Bioengineering, and passionate champion of diversity and inclusion throughout her 2014-2021 career at Clemson University. This award is presented annually to one undergraduate student who has devoted their time and effort to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in Bioengineering.

Graduate Awards

The Austin T. Moore Leadership Award is given in memory of Austin T. Moore, MD, a pioneering orthopedic surgeon and researcher who has marked the field of orthopedic implantology. This award is made possible with grants from the Moore Orthopedic Clinic and Austin T. Moore, Jr. Brace and Boot Orthopedic Company in Columbia, SC. Annually, bioengineering faculty and staff in the department nominate and/or support nominations of students for their leadership and service to the department in addition to their regular academic activities and significant progress in their academic and research program. The student's name will be engraved on a permanent plaque in Rhodes Hall.

The Mikhail Bredikhin Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award is given to an outstanding graduate teaching assistant who has been recognized by Bioengineering faculty and undergraduate students as an outstanding teaching assistant during the school year. The student's name will be engraved on a permanent plaque in Rhodes Hall.

The Page Morton Hunter Bioengineering Graduate Researcher Award is awarded to a graduate researcher who has been recognized by the Bioengineering faculty for conducting outstanding research during the school year. Dissemination of research (published papers, chapters in books, posters at conferences, patent applications, etc.), participation in grant writing, and translational and R&D activities will be considered for this award. This award is given in honor of Page Morton Hunter, in memory of her contribution and that of her husband to the Department of Bioengineering through the Hunter Endowment. It is made possible by a grant from the Page Morton Hunter Endowment to the Department of Bioengineering. The student's name will be engraved on a permanent plaque in Rhodes Hall.
