Introduction: Hi everyone! My name is Julia Jamieson, and I am a psychology major and youth development studies minor from Atlanta, Georgia. This is my final semester at Clemson, and I am currently in the process of applying to graduate school to study mental health counseling and become a counselor for the adolescent age group. I have loved everything about my time at Clemson and as a student in the Honors College, and I can't wait to share my experience with you!
Ask me about...: involvement in Greek life, Clemson Creative Inquiries, my experience as a student, the best coffee shops and restaurants in Clemson, and anything about being a psychology major.
My advice for prospective students: My advice for prospective students is to really listen to your heart when making your college decision. Try not to let the various outside opinions sway you, and if possible, try to meet some current students at the schools you are looking at to better understand what the experience of being a student is really like. Ultimately, by going with your gut, you will find a place that will be great for you and where you will make many happy memories.
My advice for current students: Don't be afraid to take a chance! Some of the best decisions I have made in my undergraduate experience have come from having the courage to say yes to a new opportunity or introduce myself to a new person. You never know what doors may open for you, and you should take advantage of all the incredible opportunities and resources that Clemson has to offer while they are still available to you!
Why I chose Clemson and the Honors College: My dad went to Clemson, so many weekends growing up were spent at tailgates and cheering on the Tigers in Memorial Stadium with my family and other alumni friends. When I applied to colleges, I knew I wanted to consider Clemson, but I was concerned that I would feel lost in such a big school. However, I discovered the Clemson Honors College and all of the resources it had to offer, and it provided the perfect environment for me to have a smaller community within a bigger school. Clemson has always felt like home, but the Honors College experience definitely amplified that!
My favorite thing about the Honors College: I love everything about the Honors College, but my favorite thing is probably the Honors Residential College. I lived there during my first year at Clemson, and that is where I met some of my very best friends. It was the best freshman year experience I could ask for to be surrounded by like-minded, hard-working individuals in state-of-the-art dorms. Some of my best college memories are from movie nights in the Deschamps Hall second-floor kitchen, hanging out in the study rooms, and running down to the Starbucks connected to the building in our slippers.
My involvement in the Honors College: I lived in the Honors Residential College my freshman year, served as an Honors Peer Ambassador my second year, and am thrilled to be joining the Honors Ambassador Team this year! Plus, I love taking advantage of all the perks the honors college offers, including fun events, thought-provoking classes, free printing, and quiet study spaces.
My involvement in Clemson University: I have been involved in my sorority Delta Gamma during my time at Clemson as an active member and serving a term as the Vice President of Programming. I am also in a Creative Inquiry Lab where my peers and I study body image and eating disorders and how they are correlated with technology. I also enjoy participating in Clemson FCA during large-group worship on Thursday nights and in small-group Bible studies.
If I could travel anywhere: Italy! I have always wanted to go, and there are so many incredible landmarks and museums there that I want to see. I specifically want to visit the Amalfi Coast. Plus, I love Italian food!
Three things I cannot live without: 1. Coffee 2. Working out (I love going to Orange Theory) 3. My family (including my dog, Teddy)
My favorite Clemson class: My favorite Clemson class has been abnormal psychology. I loved this class because it really confirmed for me that I was on the right track by pursuing psychology. It was fascinating to learn about the various psychological disorders and dive deeper into the symptomatology for each one. Further, the professor who taught my class is the one who recruited me for her Creative Inquiry team, which has been one of my favorite parts of my Clemson experience.
What makes me happy to be alive: I always feel so happy to be alive when I am with my friends and family in Death Valley during a Clemson Football night game. The atmosphere is electric, and the school spirit is unlike anything you have ever seen before. I love how thousands of fans all coming together from various walks of life can all converge in one place, find common ground, and create such a strong sense of community.
Favorite place on campus: There are so many places on campus that I love, but my current favorite is the amphitheater. When the weather is nice, FCA will have worship services out there, and many other fun memories have occurred there, such as the Panhellenic Dance Battle where I cheered on my sorority sisters. It is a communal space where people can perform or even just sit and study out in the sunshine during the school day.
My future goals: I hope to be a counselor in a private practice setting. I really hope to work with the adolescent population because these pivotal years can be extremely challenging, and I believe this age group could benefit from learning coping strategies and having a compassionate, listening ear.
What did you do this summer?: My parents were celebrating their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, and our family took a trip together to Spain! It was incredible! I fell in love with the culture, cuisine, and architecture. After the trip, I worked at a local bakery in my hometown selling decorated cookies and other treats!
What are your plans after graduation?: I am currently applying to graduate school for student Mental Health Counseling. I plan to become a counselor in a private practice setting after I finish my program and become licensed!
How has the Honors College made a difference in your life?: The Honors College has brought me some of my best friends and most special college memories, and for that, I am forever grateful. I have met professors who have pushed me to be the best version of myself, taken classes that have challenged me and expanded my thinking, and met friends who will be in my life forever. I would recommend the Clemson Honors College to anyone because of the incredible experience I have had. I feel so lucky that I have gotten to grow and develop in such a supportive environment where I am surrounded by other hard-working students and some of the brightest minds in the academic world.
