Professor Swails is an interdisciplinary scholar specializing in 20th century African American cultural and intellectual history. He is interested in African American literary and cultural movements, Black radical political movements, and broader issues of Black identity and representation in the American context. He is currently working on a book project titled The Worst of the Race: A Villainous History of Black America. It highlights the importance of Black America’s gangstas, badmen, and criminal dissidents in the making of liberatory struggle since 1877.

Before coming to Clemson, Professor Swails served as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Brown University Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America. He has presented work at many major academic conferences as well as in more popular forums including Tedx and San Diego Comic-Con International.

Professor Swails also holds a joint appoint in the Global Black Studies Program under the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies.
