Profile
I am an anthropologically trained geoarchaeologist who studies the cultural and historical ecology of wetlands and coastlines across space and time. My research integrates approaches from archaeology, geoscience, and ethnohistory to explore how people have interacted with these dynamic landscapes, focusing on feedbacks between environment, demography, and subsistence to identify drivers of change, quantify social resilience, and understand systems collapse. Through collaboration with interdisciplinary teams and engagement with diverse stakeholders, I connect insights from the past to address contemporary challenges, advance theoretical understanding, and promote conservation efforts.
Research Interests
My current research focuses on historic rice impoundments in the southeastern United States, exploring their connections to tidal agroecology, descendant community knowledge, ecosystem services, and heritage foodways. Beyond my work in South Carolina, I serve as Assistant Director of the Lagash Archaeological Project (LAP) in southern Iraq. At Lagash, we investigate the interplay of delta geomorphology, agricultural risk, and urbanization, offering critical insights into how ancient societies adapted to the challenges and opportunities of lowland coastal environments.
My lab is currently accepting graduate students (M.A. and Ph.D.). If you are interested in pursuing these and related topics, please email.
