Profile
Susan Accettullo was an M.S. student at Clemson University’s James C. Kennedy Waterfowl and Wetlands Conservation Center. Susan passed away on 15 October 2022 following a tragic accident. Susan was posthumously awarded her degree from Clemson University in May 2023. We keep Susan as a Kennedy Center student to honor her commitment and contributions to the Kennedy Center, to wetland and wildlife conservation, and to remind us all that life is precious and we should cherish every moment.
Originally from Concord, NC, she received her B.S. in Athletic Training from Catawba College in Salisbury, NC, served six years in the Navy, and received her B.A. in Biology, Environmental Studies, and Environmental Education with minors in Chemistry and Environmental Science, also from Catawba College. During her undergraduate studies, Susan received the Yarbrough Undergraduate Research Grant to investigate the ability of Chlorella vulgaris to bioremediate certain xenobiotics from tap water. Upon graduating, Susan worked as an Environmental Planner and Project Manager for the Department of Defense for six years. She joined the Army Reserves as an Environmental Engineer, which amplified her love of wildlife, leading her to pursue her master’s degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology.
Susan’s graduate research focused on herpetofauna abundance, richness, diversity, and occupancy in managed and unmanaged wetland impoundments in Yemassee, South Carolina. Susan monitored water quality and sampled herpetofauna using anuran call count surveys, cover boards, and aquatic traps.
When not engaged in field or coursework, Susan enjoyed obstacle course races, boating, fishing, and camping with her husband and four children.
